    A Wedding To Remember....

Yes indeed, we had a good time at the "Old Arcade".  But truth be told some of us have a better time than others.  Case in point, Dick, a "senior" member of the sax section really knows how to enjoy himself.

I did hear Dick say to this young lady,
"excuss me, but could you join us so my 'Dad' can take our picture".
Now that, I didn't find very funny....

Swing City meets the Cleveland Arcade

This Saturday we play at the Cleveland Arcade.  It's a first for me.  Looking forward to getting up close to a Cleveland landmark built in the 1800's.

The Arcade in Cleveland, Ohio was built in 1890 and designed by John Eisenmann. The construction was financed by John D. Rockefeller, Marcus Hanna and several other wealthy Clevelanders of the day. The cost of the project was approximately $875,000 - today it would be impossible to replicate. The inspiration of the project is said to be the Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, Italy. Although pedestrian arcades exist in several North American cities, few - if any, compare to the grandeur of the Arcade in Cleveland.

The Arcade was the first building in Cleveland to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The structure features a 5 story high atrium with extensive metal decorative work. The top floor features gargoyles which circle the entire atrium area. The structure includes the famous skylighted atrium as well as two 9-story towers, one each on Euclid Avenue and Superior Avenue.

The Battle Royale Memory Lifes ON..

Standing TALL with the Big Boys

The Swing City Big Band can be proud of there performance last night.

Ernie came in there thinking this would be cake.  But we would not lay down.  The battle was on.

No doubt about it, Ernie is a fine sax player and his boys (and girls) are all fine players.  But we took them on, tune for tune.  Who was the winner?  That's easy, all those fantastic dancers.  They were out there for every number.  Dancing like we were back in the golden Big Bands era.

    Swing Time In Oberlin....

    ...and it was GOOD

We spent our evening Saturday playing for a large number of Oberlin College students that all had at least one thing in common....SWING.

My SAX partner commented and I agree, that this group represents our future generation.  Based on what I saw, swing dance is alive and well.

The Oberlin Swing Society sponsored this event.  They started the evening with a lesson for those that might have been a little unsure of themselves.  But from the time the lesson was over until we played our last tune, they danced non stop.

Actually, there was one number that stopped everyone, Little Darlin.  This is a very slow number that caught everyone off guard.  They all just stopped and watch as a group of 3 did an Impressionistic Ballet.  Very interesting.

But once that was over, Swing, Swing and more Swing.  Even during the breaks, they had a PC programmed with more swing playing over the PA.

I almost had a heart attach watching all of that energy.

Knocked Down A Peg... BUT NOT OUT

I lost my #1 Chair in the Swing City Big Band. Granted, it was surrendered to a better player.

But it doesn't make the demotion any easier.

I will take this temporary set back and have it work FOR ME.

Now that I'm not the section leader, the pressure is off.

Swing City Big Band Swings the Night Way

Last night we played for the 103rd OVI (Ohio Volunteer Infantry)

Man oh man, what a night.

Just like the time we played for the 103rd last year, from the time we played the first song "Mack The Knife" first note till the last note of the last song "Sing, Sing, Sing," these folks were on the floor having a GOOD TIME.  We played in a small building on there compound.  It sits off of the lake with no air conditioning.  It was hot and humid.  All the windows & doors were open to catch the breezes off of Lake Erie.  Even this didn't melt ther desire for a good time.  It just served to fire us all up...

And let me tell the band was H.O.T.  (High powered, On target &  Tight)

These people of the 103rd are like one big family.  They are not related by blood but by history.  All of there fore fathers served during the Civil War.  Check the link above for history and other details of the group.

Let me tell you there roots are deep in the traditions that made this country great.  And they continue to push this tradition down to the following generations.

When the sun dipped into the lake, they had a flag lowering caramony.  One of the kids lead the group in singing the national anthem.  As the flag was lowered, one of the elders played the bugle (yes NO RECORDING, a real bugle (no valves, for those musician types).  As the evening progressed it was very clear that these traditions have helped to develop a group from very young to very old that had a love for there country as well as  there country men...

    103rd OVI Gig

Last year we (Swing City Big Band) played for the 103rd OVI (Ohio Volunteer Infantry).  This was without a doubt the best gig we had played in 2004.

Well, we are lucky to be playing for them again this year.  For those of you who don't know about this group (before last year, you could have counted me in that group),  I want to spent a little time on them.

A clip from the 103rd OVI New Letter...

Background on the 103rd Rediment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry

In August of 1862, local citizens from Cuyahoga, Lorain and Medina Counties volunteered to help preserve the Union.  Approximately 1,078 officers and soldiers made up the 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

After the war our veterans began having reunions in the 3 counties they came from.  In 1888 the reunions Officially Organized to put on the activities and the reunions turned into week long events, or what we now affectionately call "CAMPWEEK".  These reunions have continued since 1888 with out break.  A record that no other organization can claim!

In 1907 the regiment incorporated and purchased land in Sheffield Lake, Ohio for the permanent headquarters.  This land was purchased so that long after the veterans were gone, their Sons & Daughters would have a place to return to every year to honor their ancestors.

The first reunion was held at the new camp grounds in 1908 and the photo below was taken of the veterans who attended.  Starting with tents, the grounds have changed over the years.  Permanent buildings such as a Mess Hall, Dance hall, and Barracks have been built.  Individual cottages for the families have also been built.

Membership is open to anyone who can prove a lineal descent from any of the soldiers of the 103rd O.V.I.

    Another Beautiful Night of Music

The good folks in Rocky River enjoyed our performance.  We had people sitting though out the park enjoying the  sights of the park blended with big band sounds.  I added a couple of pictures from the outting, thanks to one of the wifes.

The "ham" in one of the shots is John, our male vocalist.  He was complainiing about not having his picture in the official SCBB web site, I offered to take one, and you can see he has a bit of the clown in him...

The pic I've pasted below is one taken from my music stand looking at one of the kids getting ready to dance.  I can remember when I was young, I was so fascinated with the big guys with the horns...

    Another Sax Man Walks

Glen, we'll miss you.  I found out today you will no longer be sitting in the Swing City Big Band sax section.  Why did you walk?  We had a good thing going.

    SCBB Hot @ Brendan's

I didn't see all of you at Brendans last night.  You should have been there.  We were HOT

John is an outstanding vocalist.  When he sang, the crowd always went wild.  I did a couple of solos on the flute.  The first was with John during "Moon Dance".  This is a new number for us.  The second solo was during a blues number, "Baby Drives a Fast Car"...  I had been passed over for a couple of solos.  So when this one came up, I blew my ass off.  The crowd went wild.  It was sweet.
