Mighty Goliath Players 2007 season is ON...

The first "pit" rehearsal for "Anything Goes" with the Mighty Goliath players happened last night.  Unfortunately, I missed it.  I had my retirement dinner in Livonia.  Truth be told, I'd prefer the PIT over the handshaking.  I was in a room with guys I didn't know very well if at all.  I've only been in the group for 2 years, so I felt like a fish out of water.  On top of that, with only 17 years at Ford, I was retiring when most the guys in the room had more years than me...  So funny.

Need I say, the time in the PIT would have been prefered.

    Synopsis

Reno Sweeney, an evangelist turned bar hostess, gets such a kick out of Billy Crocker that she boards a Europe-bound liner to dissuade him from pursuing Hope Harcourt.  Although Billy dreams of Hope all through the night, Hope is determined to marry Sir Evelyn Oakleigh.  Crocker has boarded without a ticket, so is forced to adopt a number of disguses.  Also aboard is a wistful little man, the Reverend Dr. Moon, whom the FBI has branded "Public Enemy 13".  Moon's ambition is to rise to the top of the list.  On landing, Hope discovers she has become an heiress, drops her Englishman and consents to marry Billy.  Oakleigh turns his attention to Reno, and Moon, to his dismay, learns that he has been judged harmless and dropped from the FBI list.

    As Nervous AS HELL!

My daughter asked me, she doesn't know it yet, but I will do it....  A solo performance at her church in North Carolina.  OMG (Oh My God), I will be "as nervous as HELL".   But after thinking about it, it's an opurtunity to do some thing special for my daughter.  Some thing she will remember long after I'm gone.  Good or Bad, it will be unforgetable.  I will create a midi track for "On Eagles Wings" and play the solo part on my flute....

Maybe, I can work in a section where I get the congregation to sing along during the chorus.  Yes indeed it will be memorable....

    What is JAZZ?

Now I understand why I's confused when I try to understand & play JAZZ!      Thanks Yogi....

    Yogi Berra explains Jazz:

    Interviewer: "Can you explain jazz?"

Yogi: "I can't, but I will. 90% of all jazz is half improvisation. The other half is the part people play while others are playing something they never played with anyone who played that part. So if you play the wrong part, it's right. If you play the right part, it might be right if you play it wrong enough. But if you play it too right, it's wrong."

    Interviewer: "I don't understand."

Yogi: "Anyone who understands jazz knows that you can't understand it. It's too complicated. That's what's so simple about it."

    Interviewer: "Do you understand it?"

Yogi: "No. That's why I can explain it. If I understood it, I wouldn't know anything about it."

Interviewer: "Are there any great jazz player alive today?"

Yogi: "No. All the great jazz players alive today are dead. Except for the ones that are still alive. But so many of them are dead, that the ones that are still alive are dying to be like the ones that are dead. Some would kill for it."

    Interviewer: "What is syncopation?"

Yogi: "That's when the note that you should hear now happens either before or after you hear it. In jazz, you don't hear notes when they happen because that would be some other type of music. Other types of music can be jazz, but only if they're the same as something different from those other kinds."

Interviewer: "Now I really don't understand."

Yogi: "I haven't taught you enough for you to not understand jazz that well."

How Do You Get To Carnegie Hall?

A fellow sax player friend of mine, Dave B, will be performing in Carnegie Hall this coming year.  This young man is going to Bowling Green University, majoring in performance & education.  He has sub'd in the Swing City Big Band.  Also, I've played with him in last year's Palace production of Crazy For You.

OK, the answer to that question

    Alabaster Jar Christmas Party

I had the pleasure to be in a room with over 300 women.  All these ladies had at least one thing in command, they were members of

This is the second year that we played for them.  That's Garth on the Drums, Keith with the Guitar and Chris on the Bass.

Such a beautiful night, the food (Love German Villa's Spiral ham), the music (of course), a fine vocal trio sang with with great harmony, and a fashion show to boot.  Yes, a fashion show....

I will admit I was hoping they would model teddy's, but we can't have everything we want....

We even had a visit from "Santa Sax"....

    On a Road of Clay

It's off to Youngstown to listen to my families dream (female side of the family)...  Clay Aiken

He's in the middle of his 2005 "Joyfull Noise" Christmas tour.  Last night my daughther & wife, with a couple of other Claymates, traveled to Cincinnati to see him perform.  They enjoyed the Joyfull singing and my wife is ready to go to Youngstown tonight to make it a "two night affair"...

House of Blues meets Nashville Star

Tonight the Top 4 Stars of the "Nashville Star""show were in Cleveland to perform.  They sang tunes from the show, standard country hits and some from there albums.  The Cleveland tour stop was at the House of Blues.

This was my first time for me in the "House of Blues".  It's a very nice venue.  An old theater converted into a club.  MaryAnne & I sat in the balcony (which was less than 1/2 full). On the main floor, no chairs, just a few tables along the sides of the room.  We didn't get a good look at the down stairs crowd, but it sounded like most of the "Nashville Star" TV fans stayed home and watched reruns of Hee Haw....

I did enjoy the show.  The back-up band was most entertaining.  A barefoot lead gitar player and a foxy fiddle player were the stand outs.  Erika Jo, the winner of the series, was the head liner.  But her performance was the least entertaining of them all.  On the other hand, Jody Evans stepped onto the stage and owned the audience.  Great job.

    Clay Aiken's Cleveland Concert

With as little sleep as I've been getting (working midnights), I spent my evening crammed into a very small space surround by "Clay Mates" of all sizes, shapes & ages.  This was my first trip to a Clay's 2005 Jukebox tour.  My wife has gone to 5 & my daughter those 5 plus a few more.  Pretty much, they will attend any concert this side of the Mississippi.....

I will admit, at this concert I got religion.  Just before intermission, Clay picks out some poor male that is there to earn points from his mate, daughter, mother or a combination there of.  For those of you who don't know, us males are out numberred 30 to 1.

Well, I was in the 6th row and in Clay's direct line of fire.  Both my wife & daughter were praying I would be picked.  I also was praying, but for another outcome.  THANK YOU JESUS.  Some other poor soul was made the fool for those woman to laugh at (parading around with a floppy hat and wearing an assortment of boa's).  This is not my idea of a good time.

But I did survive.  The concert was an outdoor affair with the Cleveland skyline as the backdrop.  Very impresive.  At the end of the night (he sang for over 2.5 hours), I was pointed in the direction of my Ranger (alone) and told to go to work.  The ladies in my life quickly went to the tour bus, hoping to get a glance and perhaps a touch of Clay.

I understand, my daughter got lucky and was able to shake his hand.

I, however, was traped in a major traffic jam trying to find my way to work, to help finance this obsession.

One of Amanda's friends was in the right place at the right time.  She got a "meet & greet" with Clay.  I've pasted the photo above.

I will admit for all my sour grapes, he is a good soul that believes in GOD and has good moral values.  Besides the fact that he can sing up a storm..

VIDEO CLAY:  This video clip of Clay was taken in Clio, Michigan. Amanda's favorite venue of the 8 venues she traveled to.  As of this writting the "Clay Boards" don't have any of the video upload from last nights  Cleveland concert.

Listen carefully, I'm sure you can hear my daughter screaming in the background.  Tho it is hard to distingish between all of the other screams...

    Michael Buble Rocks

I just returned from a Michael Buble concert.  This man is outstanding.  I'll write more later.  But, if you are not framiliar with this young artist, check out the link to his web site.  He has several selections from his CD streaming on his site.

Following is a review of Michael's performance in another city.  I agree with it 100%....
Buble seems well suited to roll as crooner
    By Robert Nesti
    Monday, July 11, 2005 - Updated: 11:40 AM EST

While most pop sensations perform in T-shirts, Michael
Buble wears an Armani suit and croons in a style
reminiscent of Bobby Darin, his greatest influence.

He's obviously caught on in a relatively short
time: In little more than a year, the baby-faced
29-year-old Canadian has moved from selling out
Scullers Jazz Club to selling out the Wang Theatre, as
he did on Saturday night. The reason no doubt comes
with the success of his No. 1 pop hit, ``Home,'' and
his pair of million-selling CDs, as well as his
marketing tie-in with Starbucks: ``Is anyone thirsty
for a Starbucks cappuccino?'' he joked midway through
    his set.

Self-effacing humor is a plus, as is his
convivial, goofy charm, but the chief reason he's
become the 21st century answer to Frank Sinatra is his
slick technique and remarkably supple voice. Backed by
a 12-piece band playing arrangements that would make
Nelson Riddle smile, Buble can sing and swing, as he
    demonstrated with an enthusiastically received
    90-minute set of mostly standards.

He moved easily between ballads (a beautifully
rendered version of Stevie Wonder's ``You and I'') and
    up-tempo numbers (Charlie Chaplin's ``Smile''). And he
assuredly took on such Sinatra favorites as ``Come Fly
With Me'' and ``I've Got You Under My Skin'' and made
them his own, which is no small feat.

He joked about his pop music rivals Clay Aiken
and Josh Groban, and flirted with the large contingent
of female fans who flocked to the front of the stage
for an impromptu dance-along with ``Save the Last
Dance For Me.'' The biggest jolt came from his version
of Maroon 5's pop hit ``This Love,'' with which the
    audience happily sang along.

His encores featured songs by Elton John and
Queen, as if to keep the audience from thinking he had
fallen out of a 1960s time warp. But for the most part
everything in the show, from the scalloped curtains to
the retro-bandstand, is packaged to create the
ambience of a old-fashioned Vegas stage show. Michael
Buble has arrived, and in fine style.

    night.

Talking about Tops Great American Rib Cook-Off

Ruben did a good job.  OK, Ruben is the reason we went to the cook-off.  But, the ribs were nice and spicy.  Like a popular commercial says, "The Tang's the Thang".    Check out the sauce on Mary Anne's face.

The Ruben's venue was set-up with about 600 chairs in a "special ticketed area" in front of the stage.  Half of these seats were filled.  The general cook-off crowd could listen in outside of the small fenced area at no additional charge.  There were many listeners in the "free" area.  Ruben was a real crowd pleasure.  He did tunes from his album, plus other covers.  After a little over an hour he left the stage with a crowd screaming for more.

No encore or autographs, he left the fans a little dissapointed.  In fact, my daughter commented that Ruben had NO table available to buy CD's, T-shirts, posters, etc.  If Ruben's looking to build a fan base, he needs a little help.

I only noticed one lady with a "Ruben" shirt.  Actually, it almost didn't count because it had a picture of both Ruben & Clay.  Could have been a Clay fan checking out the big guys stuff (kind of like us).  There was one other fan that had a "205" jersey.

Like most outtings now a days, we spent a little over $130 for the evening (three adults) for parking, Ruben's tickets, and food.   A half slab (6 bones) without the extras was 10 tickets ($1.25 per ticket)

Thanks to my daughter, I hope you enjoy a clip of.....

So, three notes walk into a bar -- a G, an Eb, and a C. The bartender looks up and says "We don't serve minors." So the Eb leaves and the other two have a fifth between them. After a few drinks, the G was out flat, and the experience was diminished. Eventually, the C sobers up, sees one of his friends missing, theother one passed out, and realizes to his horror that he's under a rest.

I added two more sound clips into the blog.

One is me playing "Angel Eyes" with the Wind Jammers Big Band.  This was presented as a sample of Dave's Alto.   This mp3 was ripped from WJBB's "Things We Did Last Summer" CD.  As a promotional plug, copies are available.  Just drop me a note in the guestbook.  This CD is a collections of 20 big band favorites.

The second clip can be found in Life in a BIG BAND item in my "Foot Locker".  This clip is another one from the Wind Jammer's CD.

Talking about The Sax on the Web Forum - Yamaha Setup

I play a Yamaha Alto , love it.  Morgan mouthpiece with a 2-1/2 plasticover reed.  Eddie Daniels ligature.

    Quote

The Sax on the Web Forum - Yamaha Setup
From my standpoint ... the biggest difference in sound will come from your mouthpiece/reed/ligature combination. Not the horn! I am primarily a tenor player ... my axe is a Classic 62 pro horn. I also play soprano & alto in the funk band I play in. My alto is a 23 series ... and you now what? I really can't tell the difference! I use the same setup on all my horns in the funk band. It works well for me. The one thing to keep in mind is that everyone is different and what works for one may not work for another.
