    Dave's Swinging Tonight

Hello Dana.  I'm on the road again to beautiful Fremont Ohio.  "Dana Dorsey and the Blue Notes" are playing at the American Legion Hall.  I'm really looking forward to this gig.  Dana promoted me (in a sense) from second alto to the solo tenor chair, TYJ (Thank You Jesus).

I don't get much of a chance to play tenor.  Also, with my "Swing City" demotion to second alto, I don't get a chance to express myself in my solos very often.

New Year's In the Singara Grotto

Looking forward to playing another New Year's Eve Gig

This year, I'll spend it with Dana and the boy's.  We are playing at the Singara Grotto in Sandusky.  It's always fun to look into the history of these different groups & club.  Check out their web site for a little history on the Ohio Grotto's.

    Grotto History, M.O.V.P.E.R.

The Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm, whose subordinate bodies are the Grottoes, is an organization by and for Master Masons. While in no way connected with Masonry proper, its membership is restricted absolutely and exclusively to Master Masons in good standing. Although it is primarily an organization for good wholesome fun and frolic, it also has its serious side. Its slogan is GOOD FELLOWSHIP, and in contact with our fellowman, this principle is exemplified to a marked degree.

For some years prior to 1889, several members of Hamilton Lodge N0. 120, F.& A.M., at Hamilton, New York, sought relaxation from the sterner duties of life by holding occasional informal meetings for fun and good fellowship. The chief spirit in the fun was LeRoy Fairchild, and in the summer of 1889, he and a devoted band of followers discovered the Enchanted Realm in which, upon entering with song and laughter, they and their successors have found a rich heritage. The first meeting of this organization was held on the 10th day of September, 1889. It was decided at this meeting that the membership of the organization should be confined to Master Masons in good standing.

    Dana Does it

Dana's boys take the stage a little past 9:00 PM last night.  We capped off the induction ceremonies for this year's Ross High School Music Hall of Fame.

Dana had an entry in the silent auction.  It wasn't until it was to late, but I found out what he built special of this induction ceramony.

A lamp made out of a FLUTE.

Man, did that hurt.  I saw it with my own eyes.  The poor flute, that has spent its life in the service of musicians.  Will now be displayed like some kind of a trophy.  Stuck on a piece of wood with a lamp shade.  How sad.  The following is NOT the one Dana made, but it gets you the general idea.

I need to do something about this.  If not, next year he might do this to a saxophone.  Next year, I'm thinking about a come back auction entry.  I'll trust none of you will spill the beans; following is a sneak preview of my entry.  I wonder how well this will be recieved?

    On a serious note

One "pleasant" surprise was had last night.  A past inductee performed for all on the piano.  He has had an outstanding career in the world of music.  Currently living in LA.  He has been the Disney studio keyboard player and played with many of the finest musical talents in this country.  He played for us last night.  At first, with just the Bass player.  But this couldn't last long, we all had to join in.  The music was great.  Everyone in the audience circled around us to catch every musical note he threw out.

After a couple of numbers, an elderly lady stands and asks, "Do you remember me?"  And yes he did, she was his piano teacher.  Her eyes looked upon him with pride.  This brilliant man's career started at her side as she began the task of forming him into a fine musician.

    Dana's Surprise

One thing I love about this time of the year are the outdoor concerts.  Again, we had an outstanding evening in Fremont's Brichard Park.  As you can tell by the photos in the album, the weather, trees and audience were the best...

And for the surprise, Don Harlan came back to sing a couple of real crowd pleasures.  Don is on a medical leave.  He's recovering and still to weak to play with us full time.  But it was a treat to have him stand in for two numbers.  He belted out "All Of Me" and "Who Can I Turn Too"...

Dana's next gig will be for the fifth annual

dinner dance. This is open to the public, hope to see a few of you there...  For additional info check the article from the

    Whirlpool Retirement Party

Dana Dorsey & the Blue Notes are playing at the
Annual Whirlpool Retirement party in Green Springs Ohio

I played with Dorsey last year and am looking forward to a repeat performance.  As you might expect, we will be playing right into the hearts of our audiance.  Our musical library is chock full of those tunes that they grew up with.

But, let me tell you, the one thing that really stood out from last years gig, the B-B-Q dinner.  The good folks at Whirlpool treated the band to an outstanding spread.  With them treating us so well, I'm sure the retirees are in good hands....

But like everything else, I can't kick back and relax after the gig (3:30 - 6:30).  From there I'm off to the Wind Jammers Big Band rehearsal in Vermilion.  We will be having a guest conductor.  A professional reed player that is moving into town.  I'll be looking forward to some tips.....

    So, what a day.....
    • first a full day at the Engine Plant in Cleveland,
    • then off to Whirlpool's party in Green Springs,
    • than Vermilion for a rehearsal and finally,
    • back home in Amherst to pass out...

Dana Dorsey Under The Big Top

It's the busy time of the year for our bands.  Tonight the Dana Dorsey band played for the good folks in Bellevue Ohio.  We were under a big top tent.  It was nice to be out of the sun.  But it was like an oven.  Not only was the temp hot...  But the band was hot to boot...

We must of done good, they were asking for autographs as we left the stage...

We're still missing are lead vocalist (Don Harlin), but Dana is doing a good job stepping in.  In case you don't know, Dana's the man with the bone...

    Senior Citizen Prom, 2005

Hollywood Nights...  Just got home from playing with Dana Dorsey and the Blue Notes.  We did a gig at the Western Reserve High School.  Now, here's a great example of today's young doing good.  So offen its only the bad that is recognized.

These kids put on a dinner dance for the local seniors.  They cooked, decorated, had awards and finally, crowned a prom king & queen.  All had a fine time.  Did my heart good to see young and old on the dance floor doing the hokey pokey and the chicken dance.  Plus, the old time sounds of "In The Mood" and "Moon Light Serenade".

You know, thats why I love playing.  To be part of a beautiful night with beautiful people.

Dana Dorsey Gig in Western Reserve

Dana Dorsey and the Blue Notes will be playing this Saturday at the Western Reserve High School.  This will be for a retirement party.  I'm sure we'll do very well.  Bob from the Wind Jammers will be filling in.

    Combo gig @ Plumbrook CC

This was the first time I played with Dana's combo.  Piano, Bass, Drums, Bone, Alto and me on Tenor, Clarinet & Flute.  It was loose.  Played out of a "bible" with just head arrangements.  The Alto man did a nice job. He's been doing it for years, all up in his head.

I did one really stupid thing.  Left one of my boxes behind.  Didn't realize it right away.  Went back to check it out, no luck.  I lost two mics and a bunch of cords.  There goes all the money I made on this gig...

    Playing for the Ohio Vets

We had a good time (Dana Dorsey & The Blue Notes), playing for the guys & gals at the Ohio Vet Home in Sandusky.  We played alot of the old Big Band favorites: In The mood, String Of Pearls, Star Dust....  Even had one of the residents come up and sing a number.   This was a crowd pleaser.

After we were done, the band showed our appriciation for there service to our country.

It was an honor to play for these patroits.
